The PCT is about to launch this scheme, one of just three in the country, which aims to provide testing, care and support for people who may be at risk of inherited cancer. People who have a close family member who has suffered from cancer will be invited to phone the service, or can be referred in by their GP. They will speak to a specialist cancer genetics nurse, who will assess each of their cases individually.
For many patients the outcome of their assessment will be simple reassurance that no further intervention is necessary. For others it may involve genetic testing to more accurately gauge their level of risk, and provide advice on prevention and possible treatment options.
One of the barriers to overcome involves presenting this to people without scaring them. People can self refer themselves, or be referred by their GP, and it has had to be borne in mind when designing the publicity materials that people may pick up the generic leaflet in their gym, supermarket and so on.
