The main aim of Flu 2 U was to make the flu clinic more accessible for patients. Our branch surgery was not designed to deal with lots of people attending at the same time and the congestion often led to short tempers and difficulties. Last year we took the flu clinic out into the community and hired a local church hall. The hall had car parking and was near a bus stop. We colour-coded the patients letters so we could easily see their requirements without the need for a computer to access their records. During the wait after the immunisations we used the time to check blood pressures, FEV1's and give smoking cessation advice to those people we had identified in the colour-coded letter - thus saving the patients another visit to the surgery.

Learning Outcomes

The whole team – clinical, non-clinical and the Patient Participation Group were involved and we received lots of positive feedback from patients. We monitored the appointments and found that most people were seen at their appointment time or earlier. At the Saturday morning clinic we saw over 850 people by 2pm. As well as proving to be a beneficial service to the patients it was a great team building experience for us.
