This continues to be a real success. The feedback from the courses in general has been very  positive. Participants are better able to manage their conditions themselves, and their  quality of life has in many cases improved significantly. Many have gone on to become  involved in health in many different aspects of the PCT, including patient participation  groups, PCT service planning groups, and Patient and Public Involvement in Health Forums.  One former participant is now training as a volunteer EPP tutor and another two are waiting  to be trained.

There have been eight courses run so far, with around 90 people taking part. Another six  courses are planned for 2006, including courses requested by patients at practice based  patients’ group.

The courses have been restricted by the need for bilingual tutors. There have been BME
participants on the courses, but we would like to run some courses in the communities, and for this we do need bilingual tutors. We have found one person who would like to train as a tutor and there is also the opportunity to use people from other PCT’s and so share their resources. It is hoped that the more people we deliver the course to the more bilingual tutors we will identify.
