Social Enterprises

There is already considerable interest amongst NHS community and provider units, currently run by Primary Care Trusts, in adopting the social enterprise model, as a way of achieving independent status outside the NHS whilst remaining within the NHS ‘family’.  These units employee about 350,000 people in England and if this initiative were to take off you could lead to the largest every transfer of public sector employees into the private sector.

The attached Newchurch Briefing Paper looks at the attractions of the social enterprise model for healthcare services and some of implications of its whole sale adoption by the NHS.

New Support to GP Practices on Patient Choice

Module 1 looks at implementing patient choice and features a self assessment framework based around eight competencies that practice teams benchmark themselves against and identify any learning needs. Module 1 is available FREE to download from www.drfosterintelligence.co.uk/choicetraining/

Module 2 is a comprehensive web based interactive training programme designed to address any knowledge gaps by providing further information on the competencies and gives the participant the opportunity to participate in scenarios and exercises to consolidate their learning.

The toolkit is the culmination of months of work by Dr Foster’s Primary Care Team working with 45 practices, eight PCTs, and a number of lead organisations involved in supporting practices.

Module 1 has also been sent to all practices and PCT chief execs with details of how to order and pay for module 2 on-line.

ABPI Code of Practice

The ABPI Code of Practice for the Pharmaceutical Industry regulates the promotion of medicines for prescribing to health professionals and sets out exactly how pharmaceutical companies are allowed to interact with you.  The Code reflects and extends beyond UK law and  many of the requirements of the Code, in particular those relating to hospitality, meetings and gifts are mirrored in health professional codes. If you are concerned that a pharmaceutical company may have breached the Code, please inform the Prescription Medicine Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA).

To find out more about the content of the Code of Practice, its operation or to find out how to complain about a pharmaceutical company, please go to www.pmcpa.org.uk.
