Case Studies to Support Practice Based Commissioning

Data Quality Initiative

Practices in North and East Cornwall PCT have an opportunity to take part in a Data Quality Initiative, which is funded as a local enhanced service (LES) for which they receive £1,000 up front and subsequently a weighted list size payment.  A practice with a list size of 12,659 receives and additional payment of £4,674.

For this payment, practices undertake some data validation, develop a dialogue with the PCT Commissioning Team and take part in an annual workshop.

The tool used for the data validation works in the on-line Cognos tool, which provides up to date data.

Case Studies to Support Practice Based Commissioning

In Broxtowe and Hucknall PCT, practices are given 93p per registered patient for validating secondary care data.  One third of the monies are paid up front.

So far there have been two validation exercises of elective and non-elective activity of cleaned data clearing house activity.  The data is about 6 weeks old and practices have approximately 2 weeks to carry out their validation exercises.

The PCT considers the data accurate, the practices involved in NAPC’s survey on behalf of the Department of Health said that at individual practice level the error rate was in the region of 5-7 percent, the difference between overspends and efficiency gains.

Practices were also charged with a 3 percent reduction across the PCT in admissions to secondary care.  At this point in the financial year, practices are on target to achieve this.
