Our Lungs Taste Bitterness In The Air
According to a study published in the journal, Nature Medicine, the human lungs can ‘taste' bitter substances in the air. The research marks the first time that taste receptors, normally found on the tongue, have been discovered in the involuntary smooth muscle that controls the flow of air into the bronchi the narrow airways of the lungs. The findings have the potential to lead to new types of drugs designed to make it easier for asthma sufferers to breathe.

Last week saw a very successful NAPC 2010 Annual Conference, the number of delegates, exhibitors and speakers approaching 700 in total. Andrew Lansely, the Secretary of State for Health, having dispensed with his speech and his jacket, spoke to, rather than at, delegates, with a real sense of conviction about the need for the current reforms. He also announced the establishment of pathfinder commissioning consortia in the New Year, accompanied by real time learning research to identify the consequential issues flowing from their arrangements.

National Association of Primary Care (NAPC) and United Health UK launch first how-to guide for GP consortia
NAPC and United Health UK have today published ‘The Essential Guide to GP Commissioning' - a resource and practical guide for professionals and managers in primary care.
Since the Department of Health published its white paper "Liberating the NHS" and its subsequent consultation documents about the proposed NHS reform plans, there has been lots of debate about what these proposals will mean in reality for GPs and primary care.
This guide has been developed to provide an introduction and practical aide for professionals and managers who want to gain an understanding of the emerging new world of GP Commissioning.
